My name is Kathy Carmichael. I'm a newly retired high school English teacher, vegan enthusiast, and blogger. I began my vegan journey in 1995 but returned to a vegetarian diet for several years due to pressure from doctors and friends. In 2009, I fully embraced veganism again, this time with confidence and conviction.
A Wake-Up Call
Twelve years ago, my husband Paul and I watched Food Inc., and it completely changed our perspective. That documentary sparked our commitment to a plant-based lifestyle and our shared goal to live a long, healthy, disease-free life.
Health, Food, and Family
I believe what we eat and how we live directly shapes our health and our future. This belief took root early in my life, shaped by watching my mother’s long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
My Mother’s Story
Diagnosed at 14, my mom faced a lifetime of illness. Despite doctors warning her not to have children, she gave birth to my sister and me. Her health declined when I was young, eventually leaving her paralyzed, blind, and bedridden. During that time, my grandmother moved in to care for us.
A Lasting Transformation
In desperation, my mom began following Dr. John McDougall’s plant-based, oil-free diet. She stopped smoking and drinking—and against all odds, regained her sight and ability to walk.
A Living Miracle
I watched her earn both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Wayne State University and build a successful career as a social worker. Today, she is 77, in remission from MS, medication-free, and still going strong. She is my miracle and my inspiration.
