Letting Go of Lifelong Medications
For 25 years, I needed three blood pressure medications. For 10 years, I took a cholesterol-lowering drug. I assumed they’d be lifelong companions—until I went plant-based. Within six months, I was able to stop all of them.
An Unexpected Beginning
My plant-based journey began about fifteen years ago during a 21-day Daniel Fast with my church, The Emmaus Community. The rules? No meat, fish, sugar, dairy, alcohol, or caffeine—basically nothing that had ever tempted me after 10 pm.
The first week was rough. I missed cookies like old friends, and steak seemed to whisper my name from afar. But by the end of three weeks, something shifted: my energy soared, my mind felt sharper, and even my blood pressure seemed to be improving.
A Doctor Becomes a Student
That fast opened my eyes. As a physician, I realized how little nutrition education I’d actually received in training. Determined to learn more, I completed a year-long certification in integrative nutrition.
What I discovered was life-changing: a whole food, plant-based lifestyle could not only prevent disease, but in many cases, reverse it.
Benefits Beyond Medication
Over time, I’ve experienced benefits far beyond coming off medications. I recover faster from exercise, sleep better, and feel a deep sense of wellness. I’ve also learned something remarkable: when people go plant-based, their bodies often adapt quickly, and most never look back.
The Gift of Support
PBS (formerly PBNSG) has been an incredible partner in this journey. They’ve provided expert guidance from coaches, instructors, nutritionists, nurses, therapists, columnists, and doctors. They’ve offered cooking demos, recipes, valuable resources, and a supportive community where sharing and caring go hand in hand.
More Than a Diet
For me, plant-based eating has been more than a diet; it’s been a transformation of health, mind, and spirit. And thanks to PBS, I’ve never felt more supported on the path.
