PAUL CHATLIN
Our Founder’s Story
Plant Based Support's founder, Paul Chatlin, was 54 years old when he was told he had three blocked coronary arteries: one at 100% and two at 65% blocked. He also had leaky valves. Minutes before being wheeled into the operating room, his cardiologist suggested Paul try a unique nutrition plan and diet change.
Paul decided to proceed with a plant-based nutrition plan to reverse his heart ailments, and within weeks his chest pains had ceased. Soon his cholesterol levels dropped dramatically. Championed by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, this diet reduces, and sometimes reverses, the effects of cardiovascular disease, as in Paul’s case.
Today, Paul is as healthy and active as ever. If you, too, are willing to make changes to live a longer and healthier life, Plant Based Support is here to offer you kindness, support, and the resources necessary to do so!
Our Growth and Community
We held our first Plant Based Support meeting in February 2014, expecting 20 to 40 attendees and 123 people showed up. Attendance remained strong, and by 2025, our community has grown to over 10,000. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we launched a first-of-its-kind virtual plant-based community. By 2021, we had fully transitioned to a virtual platform featuring nationally recognized speakers and doctors, cooking classes with plant-based chefs, and specialized sessions addressing various health concerns.
We use the term "plant-based" rather than "vegan" because vegan doesn’t always mean healthy, many processed foods fall under the vegan label. Our focus is on whole, real foods that support optimal health and prevent disease. Although we do promote this lifestyle for animals and the environment.
This work matters because heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death in the U.S., and up to 70% of these cases are preventable with a plant-based diet. Research also links poor diet to psychological and neurological conditions like ADHD, depression, and autism. Some studies show that two-thirds of ADHD cases could be prevented through nutrition. That’s an estimated five million children in the U.S. who may not need medication. In one study, switching children to a plant-based diet led to significant behavioral improvements. As Dr. Natasha McBride observed, “After the diet, they were just normal children with normal behavior.”
This is why we believe in starting with proper nutrition from the beginning, it not only supports long-term health but also shapes better food choices for the future. If you're looking to dive deeper, we highly recommend the documentaries What the Health and The Game Changers for powerful insights on the impact of diet on overall wellbeing.
