Doug’s Story: From Heart Attack Survivor to Plant-Based Advocate
Doug, a recently retired teacher from Victor, NY, faced a life-changing moment at age 49 when he survived a widowmaker heart attack. Determined not to spend the rest of his life reliant on medication, he began searching for a better way forward. His journey led him to Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s groundbreaking book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, which inspired him to radically overhaul his lifelong eating habits.
The results were transformative. Doug lost 60 pounds and, remarkably, ran his first marathon at the age of 58. His personal success became a mission to help others.
Doug went on to lead the annual Good Life Challenge, a 10-day whole food, plant-based program for teachers, staff, and employees across more than 75 school districts and small businesses throughout New York. The challenge, which has educated and empowered thousands to take charge of their health, was featured nationally on Good Morning America.
Doug holds a Master’s degree in Special Education and is a graduate of the Rouxbe Plant-Based Professional Certification program. Before his teaching career, he worked as a professional baker and served as a bakery trainer for one of America’s most prestigious grocery chains.
Today, Doug continues to share his story and expertise to inspire others to live healthier, more vibrant lives through the power of plant-based nutrition.
